Hi friends!
You know what’s funny? I’ve been doing this for a long time. This is my 17th Winter forecasting the weather professionally and I *still* have anxiety before a storm starts…”Will this be a bust?” always rolls through my mind. That’s clearly NOT the case today. We’ve got snow. Plenty of it. And several more hours of accumulations to come.
If you’re in SOUTH Jersey you have until about lunchtime before we see the sleet/ice line slowly creep north. Central and North Jersey? It’s gonna be a bit later…in fact, parts of North Jersey will remain ALL snow, and that’s why the highest totals will be up that way.
SOCCER MOM w/5 Kids Summary:
– Heavy snow will continue until 12-1pm for everyone South of Trenton, 1-3pm North of Trenton to about South of Mount Olive.
– Changeover from snow to sleet happens at the South Jersey beaches first, then it creeps inland.
– Icy travel is a HUGE concern for this afternoon. 1/2″+ of ice is possible on top of the 6″+ of snow.
– Power outage chances tick up as winds kick in with gusts over 30mph later in the day
– Storm wraps up tonight and we dig ourselves out tomorrow
– Some wrap-around moisture possible meaning some scattered snow showers tomorrow
WHERE WE STAND:
At the moment I see absolutely no reason to change course. Everything is running on-time. Heavy snow is blanketing the state. We’ve got temps solidly in the teens…we will slowly start rising into the 20s for South Jersey, then 32+ later on in the day along the SJ shoreline as that rain/snow line moves in.
We are seeing reduced visibility which tells me snow is falling at the rate of 1″+ per hour. We’ve got another 4-ish hours of accumulating snow for most of South Jersey before the changeover which will put most SQUARELY in the 6-8″ expectation zone. North of Trenton I think easily 8-12″. We’ve been highlight North Jersey for a couple days now as the “Jackpot zone”.
Precipitation type will change through the day based on location. Those expectations are below:
ICY TRAVEL:
We’ve been going hard on the ice messaging for the past 3 days. Why? Because it IS gonna be an issue. 1/2″+ of ice expected 15 miles either side of I-95. For that reason I’ll be foreceful and direct. Stay. Off. The. Roads. It will be an issue through early evening. Surface temps AWAY from the coast stay below 32° that means as the water falls out of the sky, it will freeze on contact with everything. NOT good.
The rain/snow transition line will push north, but will likely remain OUT of NWNJ:
I’d HIGHLY recommend shoveling driveways, walkways and clearing steps before the changeover happens. Then put salt down immediately. Otherwise you’ll be trying to shovel snow made heavy by accumulated ice on top.
We STAY in the 20s all week long. This means the snow will linger for the foreseeable future.
