No drama on the roads this morning and no drama in the sky, either. We’re waking up to sunshine, blue skies, and the calmest of mornings, with most spots sitting in the upper 50s. Honestly, enjoy the next few hours, because today is the start of something big. This is Day 1 of a legitimate 3-day heatwave, and we are not easing into it.
Winds are shifting out of the west and southwest today, and that’s the whole story. That westerly push shoves the heat right into our corner of South Jersey and keeps the sea breeze from doing much at the coast. Dew points will be on the lower side, so while it’s going to be hot, it won’t feel soupy just yet. Real-feel temps on the mainland will be right in line with actual air temps, maybe a degree or two above. The shore stays more comfortable, but 80 degrees at the beach with a light westerly breeze is still no joke. Slap on that sunscreen.
Mainland (Vineland, Hammonton, Mays Landing, Millville)
- High: Around 90°F
- Sunny skies all day, zero cloud cover to speak of
- Winds out of the west to southwest, 10 to 15 mph
- Humidity stays relatively comfortable for now, so enjoy it while it lasts
Shore (Cape May to LBI, Atlantic City, Ocean City)
- High: Around 80°F at the immediate beachfront
- Westerly wind keeps the sea breeze at bay, meaning no marine layer and full sun all day
- Low rip current risk today, but never hurt to check before you wade in
- Bugs make a cameo with that onshore flow gone. Bug spray is your friend this week.
- UV index will be very high. Don’t skip the sunscreen.
Friday and Saturday: The Real Deal
If today’s 90 felt like a warm-up, Friday and Saturday are the main event. We’re looking at mid-90s on the mainland both days, and the shore won’t escape it either. The good news, and this is genuinely good news for anyone with outdoor plans this weekend, is that both days stay completely dry. No storms, no humidity spike to speak of, just straight-up heat. Weddings, graduation parties, outdoor cookouts, all systems go. Just make sure you’re hydrating, because mid-90s is no joke.
Sunday: Heat Breaks, But Not Quietly
Sunday is where things get a little more interesting. Temperatures drop back into the low to mid 80s, which sounds like relief after the heat of Friday and Saturday, but humidity will be on the rise. It’s going to feel muggier. A cold front will be pushing toward us by late afternoon and into the evening, and with the moisture in place, that’s enough to bring the chance of showers and thunderstorms back into the picture.
Here’s the deal: Timing still has some wiggle room, but late afternoon Sunday into the evening looks like the window to watch. The Storm Prediction Center has not issued elevated risk designations for this event at this time, but storm chances are real, and some could produce gusty winds and heavy rain. Morning and midday Sunday look fine. Just keep an eye on the sky as the afternoon rolls on.
Overnight Sunday into Monday: The front clears things out and we start to feel genuinely comfortable again. Lows drop into the 60s heading into early week.
Looking Ahead: Early Week Cooldown
Per the Weather Prediction Center and Climate Prediction Center, here’s how the next several days are shaping up:
| Day | Outlook | Highs |
|---|---|---|
| Thu, Jun 4 | Sunny, heatwave begins | 90 mainland / 80 shore |
| Fri, Jun 5 | Sunny and hot, completely dry | Mid-90s mainland |
| Sat, Jun 6 | Sunny and hot, completely dry | Mid-90s mainland |
| Sun, Jun 7 | Humid, storm chance late afternoon/evening, cold front | Low to mid 80s |
| Mon, Jun 8 | Post-frontal, much more comfortable | Mid-to-upper 70s |
The CPC’s 6 to 10 day outlook is leaning toward above-normal temperatures and below-normal precipitation for our region. That last part is not great news. The WPC shows no significant rainfall in the forecast outside of whatever storms Sunday might produce, and with drought conditions already a concern, we could really use a soaking rain. Sunday’s storms may help a little, but we need more than a hit-or-miss event to make a dent.
Bottom line: Get through the heat safely this weekend, enjoy the dry stretch if you’ve got plans, and keep Sunday evening flexible.
Today’s Game Plan
- Morning/Midday: Get outdoor tasks done early. Temps will be climbing fast once we hit mid-morning, and by noon the mainland is already pushing into the mid-80s.
- Afternoon/Evening: Stay hydrated, stay in the shade when you can, and limit strenuous outdoor activity during peak heat. If you’re heading to the shore, slap on the sunscreen and pack the bug spray.
- Tonight: Warm overnight, lows in the mid-60s. Keep the fans running.
Day 1 of 3. We’ve got a full heatwave ahead of us, so pace yourself, look out for your neighbors and pets, and we’ll get through it together.
