A Fresh Month, a New Season, and a Beautiful Day to Kick It All Off

Pinch yourself, because it is officially June. Not just a new month on the calendar, but the start of Meteorological Summer. And South Jersey is welcoming the season in style. High pressure is firmly in control today, delivering blue skies, a light breeze, and some of the most comfortable air we have had in a while. No drama. No delays. Just a clean, gorgeous Monday to start the summer chapter off right.

The big story today is the air quality, and we mean that in the best possible way. Dew points are sitting in the 40s, which puts humidity at remarkably low levels for June 1. No sticky, no muggy, no complaints. Winds are out of the northeast at 10 to 15 mph, which will keep the shore a touch cooler than inland areas. Real-feel temps will be right in line with the actual temperature, so what you see on the thermometer is pretty much what you get.

Mainland (Vineland, Hammonton, Mays Landing, Millville)

  • High: Upper 70s to around 80°F (feels like mid-to-upper 70s)
  • Sunny skies all day, very little cloud cover to speak of
  • Northeast winds 10 to 15 mph, breezy but pleasant
  • Dew points in the 40s, humidity practically non-existent. Enjoy it while it lasts.

Shore (Cape May to LBI, Atlantic City, Ocean City)

  • High: Around 70°F at the immediate beach, mid-70s just a few miles inland
  • Northeast sea breeze keeping beach temps noticeably cooler than the mainland
  • Ocean water temps in the middle 50s. Still chilly. Wading, not swimming.
  • UV Index at a 10, which is High. Unprotected skin starts burning in as little as 15 to 20 minutes. Sunscreen is not optional today.
  • Rip current risk is Moderate. Know the flags, swim near a lifeguard.

Tomorrow, Tuesday June 2: Still Nice, But Watch the Sky

Tuesday carries over a lot of Monday’s good vibes. Highs climb into the middle 70s, and the day starts off on a pleasant note. That said, clouds will begin to build as the day goes on, and a spotty shower or isolated thunderstorm cannot be completely ruled out. Nothing organized or widespread, but worth keeping an eye on if you have outdoor plans in the afternoon or evening. Keep the app handy.

Looking Ahead: The Heat Is Coming

Per the Weather Prediction Center and Climate Prediction Center, here is how the week and beyond are shaping up:

DayOutlookHighs
Tue, June 2Mostly cloudy, spotty shower or storm possibleMid 70s
Wed, June 3Seasonable and mostly pleasantMid to upper 70s
Thu, June 4Seasonable, warming trend beginningUpper 70s
Fri, June 5Warming noticeablyLow to mid 80s
WeekendHot, well into the 80sMid to upper 80s

The CPC’s 6 to 10 day outlook is leaning toward above-normal temperatures for our region as we head toward the second week of June. In plain English: summer is not just here on the calendar. It is going to feel like it, too.

Bottom line: Today and tomorrow are your easy, comfortable days. Enjoy the low humidity while it is around because the pattern warms up fast. By the weekend, we are talking well into the 80s and it is going to feel like summer in every way. Plan accordingly.

Today’s Game Plan

  • Morning/Midday: No issues heading out the door. Temps in the mid 50s early, climbing comfortably. Grab a light jacket if you run cold, but you probably will not need it long.
  • Afternoon/Evening: Best weather of the day. Get outside. Go to the beach. Take a walk. Sunscreen if you are out more than 15 to 20 minutes in direct sun, UV is High.
  • Tonight: Clear skies, pleasant overnight. Lows dip into the lower 50s. Sleep with the window open. This is what June is supposed to feel like.

Summer is officially here and she showed up looking great. Happy June, South Jersey.
