Most of you have the day off, and hey, you’ve earned it. To those still out there keeping the lights on and the world turning, a genuine, heartfelt thank you. For everyone else, this is a day for cookouts, lawn chairs, and a little weather-watching, because today is not what you’d call a slam-dunk blue-sky Memorial Day. But it’s also far from a washout, so don’t cancel those plans just yet.
Cloudy skies will be the default setting through most of the day, but we do expect patches of broken sunshine to work their way through at times. Think partly cloudy stretches mixed with more overcast periods. The atmosphere stays a little restless, so keep an umbrella or poncho within arm’s reach. A spotty shower or even a brief storm is possible this morning, and again in the afternoon, but coverage will be noticeably lighter than what we dealt with the past couple of days. Most people will stay dry. The keyword is “spotty.” With a wind shift to the southwest helping bring in a touch of warmer air, and some peek-a-boo sun doing its thing, highs should claw back into the upper 60s to near 70 degrees on the mainland.
Mainland (Vineland, Hammonton, Mays Landing, Millville)
- High: Upper 60s to near 70°F
- Mostly cloudy with periods of broken sunshine; a spotty shower or storm possible in the morning and again in the afternoon, but coverage is isolated
- Wind: Southwest 5 to 15 mph, helping to nudge temps in the right direction
- Humidity is manageable today, not the oppressive stuff. A perfectly reasonable Memorial Day if the showers stay away from your yard.
Shore (Cape May to LBI, Atlantic City, Ocean City)
- High: Middle 60s on the sand, a touch cooler right at the water’s edge
- Southwest wind means bug trouble for Cape May County beaches today. Atlantic County beaches get a little relief from that. Something worth knowing before you pick your spot.
- Waves: 3 to 4 feet with a moderate rip current risk. Swim near a lifeguard, and if you get caught in a rip, swim parallel to the shore.
- UV Index: Ticking up a bit compared to recent days, so sunscreen still earns its place in the beach bag even with clouds around.
- Chance of a spotty afternoon shower or storm at the shore as well. Stay weather-aware if you’re out on the sand in the afternoon hours.
Tuesday Looks Noticeably Better
Overnight lows tonight drop into the lower 60s, comfortable enough for sleeping with the windows open. Then Tuesday comes in with a friendlier face. Clouds and some sun mix it up, but the big story is the warmth returning. Mainland highs push into the lower 80s. It is a step up in both temperature and overall feel, and a welcome one after a somewhat gray stretch to close out May.
Looking Ahead: A Week Worth Getting Excited About
Per the Weather Prediction Center and Climate Prediction Center, here’s how the rest of the week is shaping up:
| Day | Outlook | Highs |
|---|---|---|
| Tue, May 26 | Clouds and sun, warming nicely | Lower 80s (Mainland) |
| Wed, May 27 | Mostly pleasant, mix of clouds and sun | 70s to low 80s |
| Thu, May 28 | Continued pleasant, near seasonable | Mid to upper 70s |
| Fri, May 29 | Staying generally quiet and comfortable | 70s to low 80s |
The CPC’s 6 to 10 day outlook is leaning toward near to slightly above-normal temperatures and near-normal precipitation for our region. The short version: we oscillate between the 70s and low 80s for most of the week ahead, with no major cold shots or extreme heat in the pipeline. Pretty solid early summer stuff.
Bottom line: Get through today’s spotty activity and the rest of the week opens up nicely. Pack the Memorial Day plans tightly into the dry windows, and look forward to a warmer, more settled Tuesday onward.
Today’s Game Plan
- Morning/Midday: Keep that umbrella within reach for any spotty morning showers. Enjoy the broken sunshine when it shows up, and get any outdoor setup done early before the afternoon round moves in.
- Afternoon/Evening: Stay weather-aware, especially if you’re at the shore or mid-afternoon on the mainland. A brief storm could pop. Most people dodge it, but check radar before heading out. Cookouts in the late afternoon to evening look a bit more promising as any activity fades.
- Tonight: Skies gradually improve overnight. Lower 60s make for a comfortable evening. Sleep easy knowing Tuesday is looking a whole lot more cooperative.
Enjoy the holiday, honor the day, and know that a better stretch of weather is already on the way. You’ve earned the sunshine headed our way this week.
