Grab a jacket and find your umbrella, because the weather just slammed on the brakes. A strong cold front bulldozed through overnight, and just like that, our four-day streak of 90-degree heat is officially in the rearview mirror. Today we swing hard in the opposite direction into a cool, cloudy, and at times wet stretch that is going to stick around for a while. You might catch a few patches of broken sunshine first thing this morning, but enjoy them quick, because they fade to gray fast as that northeast wind muscles in.
We start dry early, but scattered rain works in and hangs around on and off through the day, with shower chances carrying into tonight. The big story is the temperature: highs only climb into the lower 60s. That is a roughly 30-degree nosedive from yesterday, so the air will feel raw and damp rather than the sticky heat we just said goodbye to. Real-feel readings sit in the upper 50s for much of the day thanks to that onshore breeze and the on-and-off rain.
Mainland
- High: 60 to 63° (feels like 55 to 58°)
- A few breaks of broken sun early, then quickly clouding over for a gray, dreary afternoon.
- Wind out of the northeast, steady and noticeable, keeping things cool all day.
- Damp and raw is the vibe. Scattered showers come and go, so keep the rain gear within arm’s reach.
Shore
- High: 58 to 60°F right at the immediate beach, 60 to 62° just inland
- No friendly sea breeze today. The wind is already onshore out of the northeast, which keeps the coast cloudy, cool, and breezy from the jump.
- Ocean temps are still chilly in the mid to upper 50s, so the water is not doing us any favors on the warmth front.
- UV is low under the thick cloud deck, but do not be fooled into thinking it is a beach day. This one is for the boardwalk fudge shops, not the sand.
Tomorrow: More of the Same Gray
Friday keeps the dull, cool theme rolling. Expect cloudy skies and highs once again only in the lower 60s, with that northeast wind off the ocean blowing 10 to 15 mph. We get some periods of dry weather to work with, but rain works back in later in the day. In short, it is a carbon copy of today: cool, cloudy, and unsettled.
Looking Ahead: Weekend and Into Next Week
Per the Weather Prediction Center and Climate Prediction Center, here is how the next few days are shaping up:
| Day | Outlook | Highs |
|---|---|---|
| Friday, May 22 | Cloudy, dull, and cool. Dry periods early, then rain working in later in the day. Northeast wind 10 to 15 mph. | Lower 60s |
| Saturday, May 23 | Our wet day. Areas of rain from start to finish. Some spots may not get out of the 50s. | 50s to near 60 |
| Sunday, May 24 | Slightly better. Wet start, then drier in the afternoon with a few spotty showers around. | Low to mid 60s |
| Monday, May 25 | Same deal as Sunday: wet start, spotty showers around. A welcome warm-up for the Mainland. | Mainland into the 70s, Shore in the 60s |
The CPC’s 6 to 10 day outlook is leaning toward near to above normal temperatures and a drift back toward near normal precipitation for our region as this damp pattern finally loosens its grip. The takeaway: hang in there, because things turn much nicer by the middle of next week.
Bottom line: The next several days are cool and unsettled with rain never far away, so plan indoor backups through the weekend. The reward is real, though, with a genuine warm-up and drier skies on the way by mid-week.
Today’s Game Plan
- Morning/Midday: Soak up any early broken sun fast, then grab the umbrella and a layer before you head out. The dry start does not last long.
- Afternoon/Evening: Keep the rain gear handy for those on-and-off scattered showers, and do not put much stock in the few sunny minutes. Gray rules the day.
- Tonight: Showers continue on and off, so leave the jacket by the door. Lows settle into the lower 50s.
It is a big attitude adjustment after that heat, but a cool, cozy, umbrella-friendly stretch has its own charm. We will get the sunshine back, I promise. Until then, stay dry out there.
